Being an emancipated single man, it’s great and also hard to be a landlord for the first two years. For the past five years of doing business with my apartment building, I have learned many things especially about dealing with different kinds of people.

At first I wasn’t aware of things like checking on a person’s background. I heard about domestic violence and crimes with unlikely suspects before but I wasn’t really paying attention to news like that. I have always trusted anyone just by conversation and I never knew that some people could be honest while others could be deceiving. And I never knew the threat until I learned my lessons by having myself a share of mishaps inside my apartment building.

A friend told me about background check. I thought at first that it was costly and time-consuming but my friend told me that background check services are now available online. Then I finally came to the idea of trying it. I got nothing to lose because it is going to protect my business reputation, my associates, my renters and especially my family.

I conducted a comprehensive background check having an apartment-wide coverage. I have done it with the domestic helpers and caretakers first. Then the renters followed. And I found out that one of my renters, whom I suspected to be committing petty thefts according to his neighbor, really had a former background.

Since then I have become more prudent and I made it a habit to conduct a background check to every person that I dealt with. No one wants to have someone destroy their properties or become a threat to their family and even to other people. As a landlord, it is also my responsibility to protect my renters.

Doing a background check was easier than I thought it was. Just by knowing some personal information with the help of their application papers, you can easily run a criminal background check or even a social security background check. From then on, I began to eliminate potential crooks and renters who leave their place without paying.
